Cheap October- Bargains For Baseball Tickets?

Forbes releases concerning numbers for Major League Baseball showing that ticket prices for the upcoming Playoffs are actually dropping in price, a big change in the standard trend of prices increasing for the post season.

Obviously there are many market factors affecting the prices including the availability on the secondary market and the competition from other leagues. However, the economy continuing to slip is the driving force. CEG Board Member David Carter hits the nail on the head “With better information comes more precise pricing,” referring to the teams reacting to the fans attendance throughout the year. Simply put, tickets were too expensive. Coverage is getting better and staying home is significantly less expensive.

The real question is: Is this a short term trend or will we see prices fall as corporations drop sponsorships and firms and individuals cancel season tickets? Was the explosion in new ballparks, stadiums, and arenas simply a bubble and, if so, will that bubble ever return? The US Open tracked poorly and was bailed out when Corporate America showed up ready to buy once again. I guess we’ll see if that happens to the MLB Playoffs and through the NFL season.

  1. John Stephens says:

Teams got too greedy for too long and corporations spent their bottomless money to float it. Now the real fans are the only ones buying tickets and hopefully it continues to get cheaper.
